Objectives

  • Through excellent leadership to facilitate the transformation of the organisation as it seeks to develop and implement its ambitions to become a leading heritage attraction, developing new income streams and addressing historic structural challenges.
  • Work with the Board Members and Leadership Team to lead PSVT through delivering our current strategic plan, aims and utilise our commercial assets.
  • Work with the Board Members and Leadership Team to ensure that Port Sunlight becomes and remains a thriving and inclusive community.
  • Ensure PSVT is governed effectively and is compliant in its legal duties.
  • Ensure PSVT is financially viable.

Responsibilities

To achieve this, the Chair will:

  • Facilitate Board meetings effectively and ensure that all decisions are taken in the best interest of PSVT, encouraging free, open, inclusive and constructive debate, getting to the heart of the issues and governance matters through informed, effective and timely decision making.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the Chief Executive by providing support and challenge.
  • Makes appropriate arrangements to annually appraise the performance of the Chief Executive.
  • Has the ability to manage the arrangements for determining the remuneration of the Chief Executive and other senior staff, with the support of the Board, and its delegated committees.
  • Take opportunities to understand, promote, support and represent the work of PSVT as an ambassador by visiting site and meeting with staff, stakeholders and resident groups.
  • Have the knowledge and firsthand experience of best practice governance and the operation of a high performing Board.
  • Read and consider reports for meetings, scrutinising these to understand the assumptions on which recommendations are based and decisions are well founded.
  • Lead the Board in evaluating and improving its effectiveness and operation – including promoting Board diversity.
  • Be an inspiring leader for a forward-looking Board and ensure that all Trustees are fully engaged, contribute to meetings and support the vision and aims of PSVT.
  • Ensure that strategy and operations protect PSVT’s financial sustainability and assets.
  • Ensure business decisions further the delivery of the strategic plan.
  • Support the CEO and wider organisation in making a step change in the organisation, generating new revenue streams and effective ways of working and establishing partnerships.
  • Hold annual reviews with the Board Members.
  • Plans for succession to the Board and key Board officers and makes sure that all Board Members have appropriate induction training and development plans and that these are reviewed and updated at least.

Person Profile

Our Chair will need to have demonstrated the capacity to work with a diverse set of Board Members and across a range of types of organisations.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:

  • An understanding of Charity Governance
  • Experience of chairing an organisation or strategic committee
  • Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to PSVT, its strategic objectives and cause
  • Ability to commit time to conduct the role well, including travel and attending events out of office hours
  • A track record of providing strong strategic and leadership direction
  • Ability to lead, inspire and motivate others in an authentic and inclusive way, ensuring that the Board are clear about and committed to PSVT’s vision, values and mission
  • Demonstrates dedication to the role and the organisation ensuring that they lead by example encouraging others to do the same
  • High level of integrity and awareness of personal impact on others
  • Ability to challenge in a thoughtful, empathetic and constructive manner
  • Excellent influencing and negotiation skills
  • Strategic vision, while being a practical, pragmatic and inclusive thinker
  • Flexible mind-set, willing to adapt to plans in response to changes affecting the business
  • Financial and commercial acumen in terms of understanding financial performance and strengthening and diversifying income streams
  • A fluent and persuasive communicator, who can represent PSVT publicly as well as internally and build relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Experience of being an ambassador for an organisation and evidence of effective public speaking
  • The utmost integrity, diplomacy and ability to articulate the organisation’s strategic vision
  • Understands the context in which the organisation operates and identifies opportunities for business growth and success within risk framework.
